PRODUCTION DESIGN

As mentioned, one of the most important things to me in ‘Clare sa Spéir’ was the fact that an ordinary person does something extraordinary and re-finds their selves through their actions. In terms of the look of the piece that informed the decision that I wanted a real life feel to the design, which is why the location involved is a very ordinary and non-descript suburban house, it was consciously chosen and designed this way. With the production designer John Hand (Song for a Raggy Boy) we decided that the interior should be painted in shades of cold blues and be somewhat crowded and uncomfortable to order to reflect Clare’s inner state of discontent and turmoil. However when she goes up the tree house, she personally is beginning to rediscover herself. Therefore we decided that the tree house, as well, obviously being closer to nature, should also convey the feeling of a far more warm and magical environment. John used both his wonderful and whimsical design of the tree house and the props to convey this feeling of magic and warmth.
